CARDIOLOGY

ECHOCARDIOGRAM
An echocardiogram (echo) is a test that uses high frequency sound waves (ultrasound) to make pictures of your heart.

The test is also called echocardiography or diagnostic cardiac ultrasound.

EXERCISE & NUCLEAR STRESS TESTING
A stress test, sometimes called a treadmill test or exercise test, helps a doctor find out how well your heart handles work. As your body works harder during the test, it requires more oxygen, so the heart must pump more blood. The test can show if the blood supply is reduced in the arteries that supply the heart. It also helps doctors know the kind and level of exercise appropriate for a patient.

HOLTER & EVENT MONITORING
Holter Monitoring
A Holter monitor is a battery-operated portable device that measures and records your heart’s activity (ECG) continuously for 24 to 48 hours or longer depending on the type of monitoring used. The device is the size of a small camera. It has wires with silver dollar-sized electrodes that attach to your skin. The Holter monitor and other devices that record your ECG as you go about your daily activities are called ambulatory electrocardiograms.

Event Monitoring
A cardiac event recorder is a battery-powered portable device that you control to tape-record your heart’s electrical activity (ECG) when you have symptoms. There are two types of event recorders: a loop memory monitor and a symptom event monitor.

ANTI-COAGULATION CLINIC
Many people with congenital heart defects need to take anticoagulants (*blood thinners). Common reasons for this type of treatment include heart valve replacements, heart rhythm disorders or prior complicated surgeries such as the Fontan operation. Blood-thinning medicines slow blood clotting, preventing complications like blood clots forming on artificial valves, valve obstruction and blood clots traveling to the brain and causing stroke.

Anticoagulants are usually given by mouth. In some cases they're given by vein (intravenously) or by injecting them just under the skin (subcutaneously).

VASCULAR

PVD MANAGEMENT
Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is often used interchangeably with the term “peripheral vascular disease (PVD).”

Peripheral artery disease is a narrowing of the peripheral arteries that carry blood away from the heart to other parts of the body. The most common type is lower-extremity PAD, in which blood flow is reduced to the legs and feet.

VENOUS DISEASE
Vascular disease is any condition that affects the network of your blood vessels.

VASCULAR ULTRASOUNDS
Doppler ultrasound, which gives doctors a way to see what’s going on inside your body without X-rays or injections.

Instead, it turns sound waves into images. Your doctor can use it to check for issues with blood flow, such as clots in your veins or blockages in your arteries.
